Nephrology

Nephrology

The Department of Nephrology at PIMS is one of the oldest Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant centres in central Kerala, started in 2001. We became a postgraduate centre for DM in 2019 and we have been granted 2 DM seats per year. The department takes care of all types of nephrology cases like- Acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, acute and chronic nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, Renovascular hypertension, collagen disorders and Vasculitis involving kidneys etc. Being a tertiary-level hospital, complicated cases are referred to this department from various other centres. A facility for CRRT(continuous renal replacement therapy) for critically ill patients requiring dialysis is also running regularly. Our Medical ICU is an open one where our nephrology doctors also take rounds every day and have a say in the management of our patients.

 

Renal Transplant

A renal transplant program has been in operation since 2007. The result of renal transplants is at par with the best international transplant centers. The transplant team consists of 3 Urologists, 4 Nephrologists and anaesthesia team. The department also has a well-equipped post transplant ICU next to the Operation Theatre.

Dialysis Unit

The dialysis department is a well-equipped dialysis unit with 25 dialysis machines doing over 18000 dialysis each year including CRRT and SLED around the clock. The dialysis unit has its own operation theatre with an ultrasound facility where more than 300 procedures are done each year. Procedures include IJC and femoral dialysis catheter insertions, tunnelled catheter insertions, CAPD catheter insertions, renal biopsies and minor procedures.

C.A.P.D Unit 

Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Unit

CAPD is also regularly done here along with catheter placement both by the Surgeon and Nephrologist. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Machine is also available. Patients are trained in ambulatory peritoneal dialysis in the department after catheter placement therapy by trained technicians.

 

 

A.V. Fistula Creation  

AV Fistula creations are done by Urologists, CVTS and Plastic Surgeons and problems such as fistuloplasty and fistulogram are handled by our Radiology and Cardiology department.

Kidney Biopsy 

Our kidney biopsy specimens are analysed by our renal pathologist in our pathology department and we have regular clinic-path sessions every month.

OPD

Daily OP’s are run from 9 am to 4 pm . We have 3 specialty clinics –

  • Hypertension clinic
  • Glomerular Disease clinic
  • Transplant clinic

 

Academics

The department gives utmost importance to academic.The day begins with daily teaching sessions in the morning at 8 am. Nephrology department is blessed with excellent faculty trained from premier institutes in the country.Journal clubs are conducted every week. Case presentations take place in the afternoon. PGs are encouraged to attend National and State Conferences and it is compulsory to attend atleast 2 per year. We also have interactions with Nephrologist in the nearby districts with regular clinical clubs. An all department clinical club is also organised by the hospital every week and it has been going on from the past 18 years.

Ward Rounds

Ward rounds are done daily. Following this, there is detailed discussions about all the admitted patients with every nephrology doctors being present which is a very special feature of the department enhancing department dynamics and patient care. Nephrology department also receives post graduates from departments like internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine for their rotational postings which improve interdepartmental academics and coordination. The DM trainees actively participate in teaching programs of our medical and dialysis technology students.

Faculty

We have four nephrologists. Our faculties are trained from premier institutes in India.
